Cross-posted to [livejournal.com profile] handmadebooks

I did it this evening as a Christmas gift for my younger daughter, Brenna. It's all folds and a little glue. The colour reproduction here is hideous. The cover is pale pink with bits of petals in it. The spine cover is dark pink. The pages are graphite. The 12 photos were done on my ink jet printer. I like how their imperfections add to the handmade quality of the album. I learned that I should double check all calculations before cutting. And I need a larger cutting board.

It's lovely, Van. I bet she'll treasure it even more when she's grown up.

The girls are typically self-conscious about having their pictures taken, although during the summer they eventually relaxed about the father with a camera permanently attached to the front of his face. I tried to mix some fun pics in with a few more artistic ones. I hope she gets a kick out of them.

Every year I think about giving them some kind of memento of our times together. This is the first time I have actually carried through. I'll make a book for Marian, too, this weekend, but it will be somewhat different.

I've wanted to learn this craft for years. It was fun to actually finish one.

At my Univ. there is a artists' books area with handmade books. I haven't explored it yet, but with my new class coming up in Jan, Photo & Creative Writing, I'll be up there nosing around. My students won't be required to make a handmade book but if they do, there's looking for a top grade. Making a book of photos with text, having it bound at a office supply or art supply store will suffice, if it's done well. This will be a challenging semester but teaching a class I've been interested in teaching for 10 years should be stimulating. :-)))

Congrats Van! It looks really good

This is something Brenna can enjoy for years to come.

These are a lot of work, but well worth it. And you get to relieve all those memories again while you put the pictures in the book, sealing it with love.

One year I made a calendar for my family and a few friends. I think it was 10 copies. I printed photographs, and hinged them with clear photocorners into a calendar they could flip open. I think I even have a copy myself somewhere!

Heaven help me, I'm starting to like things in pink! I blame the ladies at my knitting guild. Yes, that's it, it's all their fault! [g] And I think it has something todo with that scarf I just made.

Hugs there Van! Smooch x 3. Danny

THAT is so beautiful and warm. What an awesome gift. I always think the best gifts are memories, time spent. that is a beautiful handmade celebration of that.:)!!

That sounds like a dream course, and you sound like a terrific teacher. When I get the hang of these books, I will have fun combining my photos, fiction, poetry, nature journal writings, drawings, etc.

This one was not difficult to assemble. It took several hours (I did some cutting while we were talking on the phone). I want to experiment with more elaborate books, though, and combine photos, drawings and creative writing. Handmade calendars are a great idea, too.

I hope I have a chance to show you this book. The colours are much nicer than they appear here.

Smooch X 3

Unfortunately, I'm not so sure about my teaching abilities, however I do like to work with motivated students and this should prove interesting. I need to learn how to locate and discourage students that aren't serious right away as it holds other students back, and causes me frustration. I'm hoping this will be my breakthru course.

Thank you. I found the first site in a web search the other day, but the second one is new to me. Lots of useful resources there!
