Rattlesnake Point

This afternoon we went for a hike at Rattlesnake Point Conservation Area. Southern Ontario is relatively flat with the exception of the Niagara Escarpment, which was uplifted by retreating glaciers and the formation of the Great Lakes. Its most famous feature is Niagara Falls, but the escarpment also runs across the entire lower part of the province. Rattlesnake Point is not attached to the main escarpment, but is one of my outliers, rising separately like a castle. Canada's only poisonous snake, the Massassauga Rattlesnake, used to live around here, but it has been nearly extirpated from this part of the province.
Brenna is fearless but cautious. Marian and I suffer from mild vertigo. It wasn't enough to keep her on the safe side of the wall. In the distance you can see another section of the escarpment.
Two hours south of here, Buffalo NY is expecting a winter storm tonight, but the best we can hope for is flurries tomorrow. Looks like we'll have a green Christmas, the first one in many years.
