Wings of Paradise

We have two butterfly conservatories within driving distance, one near Niagara Falls, Ontario. A second one, Wings of Paradise, was constructed several years ago in Cambridge, barely a 20 minute drive from here. The building is less spectacular, but it actually has more to offer, with a large collection of preserved insects filling several rooms, and extensive garden tracts and woodland trails for attracting indigenous species in summer. The admission fee is inexpensive, so I take the girls for a visit every winter. We went on March 15. It was a nice reprieve from this drawn-out winter we're having: a hot, humid greenhouse full of living jewels. To see them, you'll have to click your way inside.

If you ever make it to Indianapolis, there's a nice butterfly conservatory there as well, although the last I heard, a predatory bird had gotten in and eaten several very rare creatures. :(

Fortunately, they should be replaceable. The way I understand the "butterfly industry," farms are set up in tropical countries to raise larvae. These provide jobs for indigenous communities, and are required by an industry guild to release adults butterflies into the environment to help preserve the species. Chrysalises are then shipped to conservatories in countries like Canada and the US, where the adults are hatched and released indoors. Theoretically, this butterfly conservatory fad is healthy for the environment in multiple ways.

I like the movement in the last image, too. Otherwise I chose still images, but the place is constantly aflutter. Some people are unnerved by it. They must be far detached from nature to be scared of butterflies!
