The good news is that the problem is most likely with my video card rather than the monitor itself. I will have to try connecting my monitor to another computer to see whether that is the case. Danny and I tried connecting it to my old IBM laptop (circa 1993), but it wouldn't recognize the monitor properly. Still, the pattern appearing on the screen did not seem to show the artifacts and shadows I'm getting now. This is somewhat reassuring: a new video card will not be as expensive a problem.
The bad news is the smudges are making it difficult to view photos properly on the monitor, so I will probably have to suspend publishing images until the problem is solved. Even worse, I have a headache today, such a rare event that it's undoubtedly a result of eye strain. So I will probably have to suspend most other computer activities for now, including my LiveJournal posts. This timing isn't so bad, because I'm feeling the need to reevaluate how I approach this journal.
So I'm taking today off from writing one. Danny is here and I can use the down time. I'll have to see how things go the next few days until I can get the monitor problem diagnosed and corrected. Just replying to the few comments I received today and writing this post is making my headache worse. Much worse. So it looks like I'll be cutting back on my LJ reading and correspondence considerably. If you notice my absence duing the week and care to keep in touch by email, I would much appreciate it. If it's a video card problem, I can fix it within a week or so. A new monitor would have to wait until I receive my income tax return.
