Last Saturday: walking with Danny along the Eramosa River

Today: visiting the Speed River

How pleasant it was, waking to sunshine on a Saturday morning. I got up, buzzed, trimmed my beard, showered, went back and made love with him in the glowing room.

I recall an exciting moment Thursday afternoon upon return from grocery shopping. As I pulled into my parking spot, the sun was in my eyes. The clock said 5:07, the first time this year I saw the sun after 5 pm.

"What a difference a week makes," Danny said. We walked to Guelph Lake today. A popular walking trail intersects Victoria Road. I must have hiked it before, but so long ago that it seemed unfamiliar. The path was muddy, except in shelter of the cedar woods, filled with clean packing snow. The Speed River ran alongside, sparkling and gurgling.

A white-throated sparrow paused overhead, his presence blatant indication of a weird, mild winter. A tribe of chickadees came and peered with shiny ball bearing eyes, but we had no food for them.

We emerged from woods at the base of looming Guelph Dam, circled far around and walked along the top. Somehow, I expected to see open water with waves in the breeze, but the lake was still frozen.
