Focus

Overcast sky reduced contrast, providing ideal conditions for photographing flowers. However I had to work mostly at 1/60th of a second with the aperture wide open, making crisp results difficult to achieve. Next time I'll remember to take my tripod.

So yesterday's outing proved less satisfying than the previous one. Of course I've had lots of practice with landscape photography, but scarce opportunity to work with macro since ten years ago. Even then, I couldn't get as close as this technology allows.

Earlier in the week I accidentally switched to manual focus without knowing how, and had to shut the camera off to reset. Yesterday I learned how to use it. The LCD monitor provides a neat toggle between shutter speed, aperture and focus controls, all executed with the right thumb. Working on the edge of adequate light, I spent more time worrying about these settings than composition.

In fact the camera brought my mind down to a minute focus, distracting from the broad sensuality of walking through a fragrant, humid greenhouse on a late winter day. This is one thing I dislike about photography, the reason I sometimes leave the camera home. But for now I'm swimming in newness.

From Margaret Cho's blog:

I am so beautiful, sometimes people weep when they see me. And it has nothing to do with what I look like really, it is just that I gave myself the power to say that I am beautiful....
