It has been a seesaw. Last week it looked like the summer course Marian wants to take (grade 10 science) was only available in Guelph, and her mother asked whether I could accommodate that. Spending most of the month of July with the three of us cooped up in this hot apartment would probably not be much fun, and yet I was looking forward to it.

Yesterday it all turned around. The course is offered in Peterborough after all, so my ex went ahead and registered her there. That means I might not get to spend much time with Marian at all this summer, especially if she also gets a job there.

On the plus side, Brenna and I will get to spend several weeks booting around alone together. Bren probably needs that more than Marian does, at this stage.

And it leaves the second week of July free, when Brenna goes to camp. That means I will be able to fit in a visit from [livejournal.com profile] dakoopst after all, something we had pretty well given up on for this summer. That's something I'd been looking forward to since last July, and goes a long way in cheering me up. My paws are itching.

Rain

A robin sings in the maple across street beside the Polish deli, his voice lusty and sonorous in the rain. Everything swells with moisture. All over the city, new gardens are bursting out of spaces between sidewalk and curb. This trend I advocate. I like that people are getting sick of lawn.

Every time I go down to the car, it is littered with round, flat seeds from the Chinese elm, like little green cushions. The wipers smear them away.
