Stepping into my shoes
Mar. 29th, 2011 05:57 pmThis afternoon I interviewed a naturalist friend of mine, Chris Earley, about the tour he recently led in the Galapagos. It will become a blog post at Speed River Journal in a few days. I believe it was the first journalistic interview I have done in 15 years. I love interviewing people. I am reclaiming my skills. I am reclaiming my energy.
I had to keyboard all my notes while we were talking. I'm fast, but not fast enough to catch every word. I must find a system for recording conversations over the phone. I used to have a tape recorder that hooked into the land line, but it won't work with cell.
I've known Chris for 17 years, and felt comfortable practicing on him. However, he is the kind of expert source (an author of four field guides of North American birds) I could potentially use to write stories for pay. Besides, he is smart and fun.
