One of the living souls I most admire is Jane Hirshfield. She has a profound reverence for humanity and the gift to verbalize it. I just saw a video clip of a recent reading by her. Carl Jung said fear of death was the root of all fear. By contrast, Jane Hirshfield has this to say:
One of the things that makes us deeply human is that we do know we will die. Somehow rather than this casting us into lifelong depression, the awareness of transience and of our own perishability is part of what plunges us into this moment as the most delicious possible thing.
This is not the denial of fear, but the healthiest possible response.
