I attended grade 13 in 1982-83.
What were your favourite bands?
I listened almost exclusively to Classical music. The only popular albums I owned were Diana Ross, Mahogany, and Judy Collins, Judith.
What was your favourite outfit?
I had started wearing blue jeans. That was about the limit of my rebellion.
What was up with your hair?
Who were your best friends?
Neal and Don. I sort of had a girlfriend, Sarah, who I never kissed.
What did you do after school?
I was writing an epic fantasy novel that was never finished.
Where did you work?
I didn't have a job.
Did you take the bus?
Yes, I walked a quarter of a mile to catch the school bus at the top of our road. From there it was five miles to Harrow.
Who did you have a crush on?
Don. He looked great in jeans.
Did you fight with your parents?
Yes.
Who did you have a celebrity crush on?
I was then, as now, not tuned into popular culture.
Did you smoke cigarettes?
Never.
Did you lug all of your books around in your backpack all day because you were too nervous to find your locker?
No, it was a small enough school (500 students) that I stopped at my locker between every class.
Did you have a 'clique'?
No, although by grade 13 I had started to have a loose circle of friends, some of them a grade behind me. I have some happy memories from grade 13, one of the few years for which that is true.
Admit it, were you popular?
Never. I was shy and absorbed in books.
Who did you want to be just like?
Don. He looked great in jeans.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
My real dream was to be a novelist, but real people never made a living that way. Besides, it was kind of artsy and people might think I was gay. So I registered for wildlife biology at University of Guelph.
Where did you think you'd be at the age you are now?
Happily married with six children. I was a bit confused.
Now it's time for me to go pick up Brenna. More tonight.
