from my friend:
By the way, I forgot to tell you that I went to hear Rufus Wainwright on Monday night. He and his band put on the most fabulous concert I have ever
attended. They played in a beautiful church right near my house, so the venue was relatively small and intimate. I had no idea about his inspired silliness.
He was absolutely adorable and hilarious as well as a wonderful musician. The woman who opened for him also sang back-up and played guitar and violin later. She dedicated her last solo number called "We Don't Own It" to Elliott
Smith. She calls herself "Joan as Police Woman" (a tribute to Angie Dickinson) and
has a wonderful voice as well as playing kick-ass piano and violin. I didn't catch her last name. For the last few numbers they all wore lingerie, then witches hats and capes (Rufus had on striped knee socks and high-heeled ruby slippers, and collapsed to the ground at the end of one song like the witch in Wizard of Oz) and finally bathrobes. In the first lingerie number, Rufus also had a tiara and fairy wings. One guy in the audience, moved by so much splendor, called out "Beautiful!" in a heavy German accent. I wish you had been there.
