The third annual Guelph Pride Picnic took place in Royal City Park Sunday. Walking over, halfway down the block I felt a spit of rain on my arm, so went back for my umbrella. By the time I reached the park, the sun had emerged. Thunderclouds circled all afternoon, but never darkened or rained on our festivities.

The Rainbow Chorus performed. So did Muffy St. Bernard. Drag queens run the gamut from frivolous to offensive, but Muffy has class.

The entertainment in 2003 consisted of one long drag show carried entirely by Muffy and another persona who complained incessantly about the fact that she couldn’t drink (Guelph Pride is not a licensed event).

Last year, politics excluded drag queens entirely. Somebody had gall. These girls have been on the front lines since before Stonewall, fighting for civil rights and, more recently, raising funds for AIDS research.

I’m glad Muffy was invited this year.

“I like Guelph,” she said. “Everyone here has good attitudes. No drunken brawls. At least not over me. Yet.”

She seemed quite comfortable with herself, alcohol or not. Even comfortable enough, as you can see from the photos, to let a budding personality named Odessa upstage her.

[I'm staying at [livejournal.com profile] detailbear's to help him clean the house and pack for moving. I'll be here tomorrow, then catch a train to Windsor, see my parents and pick up the Sunfire for the summer. Wednesday back home for a few hours to clear out my bathroom so the plumbers can start renovating Thursday morning. I'll go to Toronto Wednesday night, won't have time to catch up on LJ until Thursday. Pant, pant.]

Odessa is clearly starting off on the right foot: "...doesn't matter WHO, I'll upstage anyone!" At that age, they have such a marvelously plastic idea of what "normal" is.

I like how you put that. It's so different from the teen years, in which most kids go through a phase of rejecting anything that doesn't fit their narrow view. Marian has already started to emerge from the far side of that, in which she is again intrigued by ideas different from her own.

Once again our paths miss. When do you return to Toronto?

Thank you; I suppose it's more accurate to say "Everything is strange to them, as they're learning, seeing and doing everything for the first time." but it often comes to the same thing.
