The Turfgrass Institute

Bladder campion, Silene cucubalus

Once hot weather arrives I rarely visit Lilac Way, but last night [livejournal.com profile] djjo and I went hoping to find a breath of wind. The track skirts one of the area's highest hills. We started following the trail until mosquitoes and the quest for better light drove us higher. I had never before approached the top where the Turfgrass Institute stands, but last night we did.

The air was amenably warm, with the gentlest of breezes escorting all kinds of summer field smells that reminded me of Essex County where I grew up. For half an hour we stood on the gravel drive that idles down from the research centre. A biplane circled overhead and birds frisked in the dusk.

I tried to remember the last time I watched a sunset with someone. I've strolled and enjoyed them, even with Danny, but I mean stopping and absorbing it. Admittedly, I danced all over the hill getting different angles for photographs while he stood blissfully still.

On the way down we passed a meadow overgrown with black locusts, their pendant white blooms suffusing the evening. A fragrance like jasmine, Danny said. I would never have made the connection, but he was right.

I'm amazed by how the flowers in the foreground and the sky are BOTH in perfect focus. However did you manage it?

My camera is essentially point-and-shoot. It normally has a wide depth of field, but I can't manipulate it much. The only unusual thing I did here was use the fill flash feature. Here's a different image of the same thing:

I love the shot of the bladder campion caught against the gorgeous sunset--unreally beautiful--and meditative Danny with the Moon.

Meditative, you think? I believe he's trying to look pretty and quietly concocting something devilish for me. Either that, or planning his next shawl.

OK, so either he's thinking "I'm gonna split him open like a ripe summer peach" OR "I wonder whether some threads of fuschia would look better as a counterpoint to the frambroise motif?"

Both could require some moments of deeper, focused meditation.
