Solidago

The other day during the rapture of my new writing obsession, the words of a favourite song erupted from my subconscious. Then it struck me, that's what "Fascination" is all about: the thread of energy that makes creativity both satisfying and addictive.

Today I Googled Human League online, and discovered that's precisely what the lyrics mean. Fascination arose from the band's recording sessions. It's about the creative process. It also happens to be one of the few remarkably good songs about being happy. Maybe the meaning eluded me so long because this sense of unbridled potential has visited me so rarely.

I didn't know how to finish everything in time to visit [livejournal.com profile] roosterbear and [livejournal.com profile] quillon in Toronto this evening. I had committed myself last week to writing a short story this morning for 1001 Nights Cast. But I didn't want to back out of my promise to myself, to work on Tendril's story for two hours today.

Finishing today's submission at 10:30, I realized it had fulfilled both projects at once. Although the characters' names are changed, today's reading on 1001 Nights Cast was part of Tendril's backstory. It's amazing when threads weave together that way, and fantasies are learned.

Fascination

If it seems a little time is needed
Decisions to be made
The good advice of friends unheeded
The best of plans mislaid
Just looking for a new direction
In an old familiar way
The forming of a new connection
To study or to play

And so the conversation turned
Until the sun went down
And many fantasies were learned
On that day

Keep feeling fascination
Passion burning
Love so strong
Keep feeling fascination
Looking learning
Moving on

Well the truth may need some
Re-arranging
Stories to be told
And plain to see the facts are changing
No meaning left to hold

And so the conversation turned
Until the sun went down
And many fantasies were learned
On that day

And so the conversation turned
Until the sun went down
And many fantasies were learned
On that day

I agree heartily. Note the popularity of ranting and complaining. Bitchiness is the new cool. It bugs me. I'm no pie-in-the-sky optimist, in fact I'm a dedicated cynic who's prone to depression. But gloom is overrated.

I shake my head in amusement every time I hear the urban legend (even promulgated by Scientologists) that Bobby "Don't worry, be happy" McFerrin committed suicide. He has actually led a distinguished and varied career since dropping off the pop culture radar. He conducts orchestras and has recorded with the likes of Yo-Yo Ma.

I found this comment when looking up another favourite feel good song:
Some music you just shouldn't overanalyze, for fear of taking all the life out of it. "Walking On Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves, was not ground breaking or especially thought-provoking. It was just an upbeat, catchy dance track with a 1960s pop sound and a message about feeling good, and that is as much as I'm going to say about it.
Maybe we should take more time to analyze it. Why are songs like this so rare?
