Sugar maple leaf and chrysanthemums

I had to drop off and renew books this morning. Guelph Public Library is situated on the edge of downtown, adjacent to one of the city's loveliest old neighbourhoods. Instead of using the parking lot, I park for free on a nearby side street and walk a block past 19th Century houses. It was a gorgeous, warm morning. Hazy sun imparted a dreamy soft focus on bright trees and flowers of early autumn. The only sound was a whisper of leaves letting go, sifting through branches and falling to rest on the sidewalk.

I spent all afternoon helping Bob erect a fence behind his condo. After lunch the sun came around and beat down on the back patio. We had to stop and sit in the shade between bursts of drilling and hammering. I had to take my shirt off. I was thankful for the opportunity to spend the day outside. Bob treated me to dinner at Angel's Diner.

The days have been full lately. It's as if my Guelph friends, particularly Sylvie and Bob, heard me complaining about feeling isolated, and decided to reconnect. Bob has more work to do on the fence. I offered to help on Thursday.

Life can be so hard sometimes,

Bob has more work to do on the fence. I offered to help on Thursday.

Aha! He's using the Tom Sawyer Technique -- and it's working!

Love the photograph, as usual.

Thanks and thanks. Yeah, I'm uncertain about Bob's agenda sometimes, but I'm not complaining: it gets me out of the apartment.

oooooo, mums. I am a mum addict. Mine are not blooming yet but will be in a few weeks, so I will enjoy yours in the meantime.

It's surprising how you get all the good stuff a few weeks ahead of us in the spring, but your mums are delayed. I guess they need cool weather to stimulate them to flower. Not that we've had much of that. We're still in the grip of summer heat, though it's expected to cool off tonight.

Mums remind me of Mom. They're one of her favourites and we always had lots of them in the fall garden. She would buy a new tub every year and just sink them in the ground once they finished flowering.

I wish I could do that (have them in the ground) but we hve a terrible gopher problem and they delight in them.
All of my mums are growing in 3-5 gallon pots this year (until we can get the gopher(s) under control with a barrier of gopher purge around the growing area.
These are growing so vigorously that I'm planning on propagating several plants off of each 'breeder' plant so maybe I'll have enough for some to try their luck on going into the ground.
