Brenna modeling the scarf I knitted for Mom for Christmas. It's a short row ribbed scarf made with Sheepjes Alpine (75% wool, 25% acrylic) colour 5015.

I hadn't seen Marian and Brenna together this fall, until last weekend when I photographed them at the Christmas concert. Even then an important detail escaped my notice. Last night I picked them up in the dark, we were hurried and excited, and I missed it again.

Until this afternoon. I had dropped them off near some favourite shops while I ran last-minute errands. When I returned, walked into the store and saw them standing together, I finally realized.

Brenna is as tall as Marian.

She was always a little longer for her age, but seeing this was a shock. She must have sprouted another inch since I measured them in August. They're both 5'1", and Brenna will likely gain another inch.

Her expression in this photo is somewhat characteristic. She's a sharp one, missing nothing, and can be a relentless tease. Her clever fingers create marvellous things out of beads, wire, clay and paper.

Recently she has demonstrated an interest in journaling, something I tried to introduce to them both several years ago. And last night I learned she has won a Legion award for the best poem from the schools in her town, two years in a row.

I've noticed lately that she's looking more adult-ish in the face. How wonderful that she's a writer now!

And that's a *gorgeous* scarf. I may try my hand at it, though the list of the knitting projects I dream of is long. Do you have to do any sewing with it, or do you pick up stitches?

Unfortunately the poem was written on a school computer, so I haven't had a chance to see it yet. I hope I do.

You think so? I've always felt Brenna has my colour and complexion but more of her mother's features, and Marian is the other way around. But they both bear the distinctive mark of Waffle genes.

No sewing, the stitches are picked up. Here's the pattern:

It's not too difficult, although you have to keep count of rows and stitches. I made a number of mistakes and had to rip out some rows a few times.

You posted a shot of yourself clean-shaven on the beach at one point, and that's what Brenna reminded me of in this picture (without the chest fur, of course).

Wow, that was a long time ago, both the photo and the post. You have a good visual memory. I don't retain things like that about people.
