Marian won first prize today (intermediate physical science) at her regional science fair for a project measuring the effect of temperature on light intensity of glow sticks. It was held at Trent University. She received $75.

I had hoped to make the trip, but this morning didn't feel up to spending seven hours on the highway, considering I have to do it again on Friday. I felt guilty this morning. Marian said it wouldn't have been worth the trouble; not much happened except a bunch of people stood around, and a professor showed a movie. It seems talking on the phone was enough for her.

"Congratulations!" I said.

"What?" She didn't seem to recognize the word.

"Congratulations," I repeated. "Who'd have thunk it, a year ago?"

"I know," she laughed. "I didn't even hand one in."

"I'm very proud of you."

She is having trouble choosing what courses to take in the future, because she wants to take everything. I remember the same feeling at that age of having so many interests I didn't know where to focus my time.

Maybe I still feel that way. I just don't have as much energy. I hope she never loses her enthusiasm.

Woohoo!

Thank you, Love. I'll pass the hug along on Friday. We're looking forward to watching the two Miyazaki DVDs on Friday night, too.

That's super! I know that feeling so well, such a warm glow of pride in the achievements of one's darling child!

Seven hours? Eesh! Don't sweat it too much. Not until you get that jet and can be there in about twenty minutes. Otherwise, the phone call was good substitute.

Yes, and you have a lot to take pride in. I find it especially sweet knowing how hard she has worked at turning her work habits around, and I'm grateful for a few teachers who seem to have inspired her.

Yes, I spend six hours on the road every time I go to pick the girls up or take them home, and the event today would have been a little further. It's hard not to resent that distance, which makes it hard to share more experiences with them. But you're right about the phone; it has served us pretty well.

Thanks! I'm thrilled with the new camera. I could never take shots like these before. I deliberately underexposed these, but the fluorescent effect of the blue flowers and the glimpse of light reflected on water is precisely what my eyes saw.

She certainly has. I was proud of her anyway, but I'm glad to see her applying herself more. It will open opportunities for her.

She also made an interesting observation, that the energy companies were evident, giving special awards to projects that looked at any kind of alternative power.

And you're welcome!

I wish I had an eye for photography. But what I "think" will come out nice, just looks like a tacky polaroid moment. I'll stick to painting.

I imagine this must be one of the very best parts of being a parent - seeing your children excel and prosper. Congrats to you both for a job well done.

I always dig your photos, but these two are particularly outstanding. I especially love the one with the wildflowers.

I've emphasized to my daughters that my pride in them is not dependent on scholastic or career achievements, that my only hope is for them to be happy. Still, it is indeed encouraging to see Marian finding a niche that opens more opportunities for her.

I'm glad these photos struck a chord with some people. With the new camera I can try risks and experiments that were never possible before.
