Splinters

Connor and I arrived safely home from Lake Fletcher about an hour ago.

We had barely arrived there Monday afternoon, and were lounging on the dock when I got several large splinters in my right triceps (upper back of the arm). Connor was able to pull out one or two, but the two largest were subcutaneous. We drove 45 minutes to the walk-in clinic in Bracebridge, which eventually referred me to hospital emergency, because it required freezing so they could make two small incisions. The largest splinter was about 4 cm (1½ in) long. The largest wound required packing, so we had to return to Bracebridge yesterday and today to have the dressing changed, and this will likely continue for two more days. There is some risk of infection, but it seems to be healing well and the pain has become negligible.

The inconvenience has hardly been detrimental to our visit. The weather was fabulous, the forest was chartreuse with bursting maple buds, and we enjoyed the excuse to drive around the countryside. We had considered staying an extra day, but the population of blackflies increased intensely yesterday, and both of us were eager for showers.

Enjoying the company immensely.

I have chorus rehearsal this evening. Will post again tomorrow.

Ouch! I hate splinters. Nevertheless, I love the descriptive images. Thanks for another lovely post.

Thanks for your inquiry, Vicki. This little wound has been such an adventure. It still needs attention for a few more days. The doctor in Guelph was cranky and old-fashioned. He was appalled that the doctor in Bracebridge hadn't put me on antibiotics, and shoved a prescription into my hand. This morning the doctor here in Toronto said it's healing fine without, so I'm glad I waited for another opinion. I have to go back to get the packing changed again on Monday. There's not much pain, just the inconvenience of sitting in a waiting room for 90 minutes every time

The chorus has been an essential community over the years, and another mode of expression. I'm really glad to be a part of it.

Hugs
Van

Many thanks. I've been feeling tired of making these daily posts, needing to rethink the commitment and content. Description is what I like best. Thanks for the feedback.
