Envy

Today I took a voyeuristic stroll around the Queen Street hill, Guelph's finest neighbourhood, and took photos of the mansions. There's greater beauty to be found elsewhere, but these images illustrate part of the city's heritage.

Whee! I can see my work in big picture #5!
I used to walk in that area at lunchtime in my first year. When I was first looking to buy a house. Needless to say, I didn't buy one of those!
Guelph has many grand old houses - fortunately these have not been comverted into 14-unit student coops (not co-ops!)

It's surprising to see a small apartment building right beside the really big house in #2, but fortunately it hasn't affected the character of the neighbhourhood.

I'll try to get in touch in a few days when the girls and I are around Guelph.

Sorry - although it is more fun to imagine that I go on nighttime stealth landscaping raids. Or commando-style yellow painting raids, in this case :)

Nice doorways in this area - each one has character.

I like the roof pattern on number 7 - I suspect the photographic effect looks better than the real thing.

It always look so idyllic in photos.

How's this for sad - if I were to do that in Toronto, most likely I'd have people sending the police out cause I must obviously be casing the houses for break-in.

Unfortunately yes, it was an effect of reducing the size of the original image.

Actually I was nervous that something like that might happen.

And I feel no real envy. From personal experience (my ex-wife's family lived on Glencairn between Bathurst and Avenue Road in Toronto) I feel a mixture of amusement and pity for the people who live in these houses.

The alternative?



Hehe! Actually Guelph is quiet, with a relatively low crime rate. But the conservative aspects are balanced by a university, a large and active artistic community, and a large gay and lesbian population.

The house attached to that garage is practically a castle, but I couldn't get a decent shot through the trees.
