The bad and the good
Sep. 10th, 2008 08:53 pmSo far I don't like CBC Radio 2's morning program, and the midday Classical program makes a tepid offering of hits and warhorses, not nearly as interesting a mix as I had come to expect.
But Radio 2 Drive with Rich Terfry, from 3 to 6 p.m. is good. Billed as "A mix of current singer-songwriters, roots and urban music," it surprised me last week by programming k.d. lang, Sarah Harmer, Rufus Wainwright and Martha Wainwright all in the same afternoon. I was hooked. Even better, it has already introduced me to a few new artists I really like. For example, Canadian rhythm and blues singer Divine Brown. Here is the exciting first single from her new album, released last month. Wow!

Okay, the Classical midday show isn't terrible for what it is. But why would CBC scrap so much programming that provided context and insight, and replace it with mediocre programming that emphasizes the most overplayed repertoire? It's hardly an expression of diversity. It's as if someone wants to prove that Classical music is boring and irrelevant.
And Radio 2 Morning is just irritating. I don't even want to talk about it.
