The loom has arrived. Les picked it up from Danny's house yesterday morning and transported it in his van. It arrived in Fergus after work and I transferred the smaller parts to my car. Today Les brought the frame to my place. Danny and I lugged it up the two flights of stairs to my apartment. It isn't heavy, just awkward. Then I took Danny and Les for lunch at Wok's Taste.

It is a Leclerc Nilus 4 shafts jack-type loom. It takes up about as much floor space as the folded up futon, and occupies the place of honour between the two living room windows, like an altar. Danny and I will assemble it later this afternoon, after we get back from Knit and Chat at All Strung Out.

I thought I would have to get rid of the old dining room table, but this morning I tried setting it up in a corner of the bedroom. The space was already occupied by boxes. Now I can put them underneath, and there's a nice flat surface for folding laundry. Okay, realistically, it will be for piling wrinkly laundry until I wear it. It's better than the floor. The room doesn't feel any smaller, it's more functional, and potentially I can make another work space by putting laundry away, yes? Some things were meant to be.

Yesterday at work I tried to explain to Denis, I will be learning to weave next week. He didn't understand the words weave or loom.

I said, "It makes cloth."

"Ya, ya, okay! But it is artistic, I think?"

Yes. Then he guessed we were talking about a mètier á tisser. Tissage is weaving. Mètier means a job. So the French expression for loom translates literally as "a textile job".

I can hardly learn how to use the textile job. I leave for Haliburton tomorrow and the course starts Monday morning.
