Maze

I used to love drawing mazes. Probably I still would. Early this morning as I drowsed through hypnopompic states, I kept drawing a maze in my mind's eye. At the centre was a blob like a flower or witch's jelly. That was the place you had to get to. I kept tracing paths around the edges. I couldn't figure the best way and the paths would disappear as soon as I drew them, still it was a superior pursuit to trying to do long division (long, long) in my head (a recurring dream of my youth).

This evening I realized the witch's jelly came to mind because of this 2006 photo I found last night while looking for photos of tree bark. Not until I went looking on Flickr just now to find the image for this post, did I remember the maze of wood grain running beneath it.

The meaning of this dream is probably just that I should allow myself the luxury of drawing and photographing more weird stuff.

That's really neat. Never heard of witch's jelly before.

I believe this species is Dacrymyces palmatus, which is edible. It is from a class of fungi that look like jelly. Others are called witches' butter. We usually see it on rotting logs around the cottage in the summer.
