Exorcism

Arriving home from writers' circle last night I noticed my mood had lifted. It had taken three days since an unpleasant interpersonal event on Saturday. Finally, without social or mental activities to distract me, I could think about other things and take pleasure in the simple act of coming home, greeting Danny, tidying, carrying out garbage. Ashley's writing prompt last night was "fall equinox". The responses from the group were unusually dark. So was mine. It must have helped me exorcise bitterness. Also yesterday I got the idea to write a letter to someone in my life—a letter I will never send—to give form and closure to my hurt and anger. It's an obvious strategy, but one I seldom employ. That's my task for next time I sit down to write. Writers' circle has evolved again; a couple old faithfuls have moved away or moved on while two new enthusiastic members have joined to fill the void, like magic. We don't talk much about personal shit, but the nakedness of the writing process builds an unique and powerful intimacy. I don't know where I would be without it.
