When I first met [livejournal.com profile] themage, he had short hair and mine was long, almost to my shoulders. That was six or seven years ago, and we got together one evening a week with a few others to play Magic: The Gathering.

I hadn't seen him in a couple years, but surprise, his partner [livejournal.com profile] manhattan found me on LJ shortly after I joined last spring. I still pictured him with short hair, too, so I was surprised to read he would be getting his long hair cut off as part of a United Way fundraiser at work. I was nonplussed at never having the chance to see him with it long, so he invited me to drop by ahead of the event today and take photos.

His department held a raffle to see who would get to take the first chop. They raised more than $200. His boss, Katie, won the privilege. Here she is taking the scissors to his locks with supervision from the event's official barber, Claudio.

[livejournal.com profile] themage wasn't the only one. Four co-workers got their scalps buzzed. Altogether The Co-operators raised more than $79,000 for charity. [livejournal.com profile] themage also donated his ponytail to the Canadian Cancer Society to make wigs for kids who underwent radiation treatments.

[livejournal.com profile] manhattan wasn't altogether happy about her partner agreeing to get his silky head sheared, so [livejournal.com profile] themage didn't get buzzed. His new business cut is quite becoming and makes him look younger.

Sometimes it just takes a little excuse for friends to reconnect. A photo op will do.
