Some of you will be happy to hear that Tendril and Crock will probably return in November.

Maybe I'm crazy, but yesterday I registered for NaNoWriMo. Which means I have to decide what I'm going to write 50,000 words about in the month of November. I had several different ideas, but the most compelling one revolves around Tendril.

A couple questions kept bothering me. I hadn't written it yet, but I knew Crock was going to get kidnapped. I kept wondering:

  1. Why?

  2. How will Tendril get him back?

Today I received an answer to the first question, and I'm getting closer to answering the second. I have enough to start writing and keep the action moving.

I wasn't sure about the talking squash, but apparently it will play an important role. Mrs. Apron will also return, along with Credenza and probably Lesson. Lark was redundant. He and Tendril are aspects of the same character. So my previous effort wasn't a waste of time after all. I will use a few ideas from it. Those five chapters, however, will not be part of the novel. I will post it in this journal.

Now that I'm getting that settled, I can keep working on [livejournal.com profile] blind_king, which will of course get set aside for the month of November.

Well, this is exciting! being something of a greenhorn still in LJ-land, I'd never really heard of NaNoWriMo, and kept meaning to ask you just what the scoop is with that acronym. There's something so Virgoan about anything that starts with the letters NANO-, I'm afraid my leonine frumpiness was in crusty rebellion at first.

Having visited the website, though, it all sounds like a good plan for you. I wish you all the best with your plan. And I hope poor Crock survives his encounter with those deaf, dysfunctional Faeries!

Hmm, I'm afraid I don't know enough about astrology to catch all your meaning.

I hope I survive my encounter with the Faeries, too. ;-)

The way I like to do this sort of thing is to brainstorm, kind of a free association. What would work? Are there any other characters that need to come into play? Just let your mind wander, and every time you answer a question, ask another, until you have a string of even remotely plausible answers. Just let your mind wander, and get a loose idea of what happened. It's kind of like drawing a picture, each time you come back to it bringing it a little more sharply into focus.

This is the fun part. Well, one of the fun parts. Actually writing it, once you have a vague idea, is another fun part.
