Thanks to a kind and subtle suggestion in an email from Danny I decided to go for a walk to clear my head at 3 p.m., not my usual time. The air had the sweet, mild quality of nectar, the light was fine as aged wine.

But the most beautiful thing in the entire park this week is the young red oak.

The final image, behind the cut, will be cross-posted in [livejournal.com profile] photocontest.

You and Rob are getting some killer pics! You, Rob, and Ian ought to do something special for Miamiartexchange.com soon... *hint*

I'm somewhat taken aback that my photos are so popular. I do love photography, but my inner writer is jealous. One problem I have is my shoddy camera; the resolution of my images is nowhere near as high as Bob or Ian's. Much larger than 600 x 400 and it starts to show.

You can pine for resolution, but they're working real well online.

I don't know what to say. Your words mean a lot to me.

Nice icon.

Any idea what that berry is in the last pic. I came across something similar (may be the same) in our back fields - absolute black in colour - and I dont know what it is. I'll post a pic shortly . .

Yes, it is a buckthorn, Rhamnus sp. One year when I still lived in the country we had a West Coast bird, a varied thrush, spend the winter at our feeder. An ornithologist from U of G Arboretum said the bird (which probably got lost in a storm) was attracted to all the buckthorn berries in our meadow. The common buckthorn, which is an introduced species, stays green and keeps it leaves until late autumn. This pretty hedge has turned colour, so it might be a native species. The leaves of common buckthorn are blunt or rounded at the ends; the native ones are slightly pointed, like these.

Oh - and I forgot to say I rather like that first one - it's definitely a bit spooky looking the way you've caught it in the light, in a sea of Halloween stuff that decidely isn't.

Believe me, waiting for the ghostie to flail his tentacles just so was almost as tedious as getting three pets to sit together on a bed. ;-)

Thank you, and thanks for joining me. You have some lovely photos, too. The bells are nice, and the ones of you and Mike are nice to look at. ;-)

Is Elli your daughter? I have two daughters. I see a lot of them during the summer, not much during the school year. Marian turns 12 in December and Brenna turns 10 in two weeks. Here is one of my favourite posts with pictures of them from the past six months.

what a lovely post thanks for pointing it out to me, and what a lovely Icon. Your daughters are beautiful. Those pics were really amazing, so much love and joy.

I can't imagine life without my daughter.

I can't imagine life without my daughter.

I can't imagine either. I had a hard time adjusting when they moved away from my city in '98, but our times together are wonderful. I'll see them the weekend of Nov. 15, Brenna's birthday, and then I expect to have them for more than a week over Christmas. Looking forward to the visits.

Thanks for sharing these; I particularly love the two of the young red oak. They are both redolent of the energy I am feeling at this point in the year.

I am sure you are on the bus by now. Hope you have a wonderful visit with Danny and all the bearded hunks of TO.

In fact I'll be at home for a few more hours, trying to get other things done. Glad you enjoyed the photos.

#3 is amazing. I love the leaves and the sky, as well as your lyrical description of the afternoon air.

It must be nice to have such an empathetic man in your life.

Thanks, too bad we didn't have such fine weather last week, but it was still wonderful to show you around some of these places that I love.
