Today was almost a total loss as far as writing goes, but I managed to make up for it this evening.

My computer had been working slower and crashing more often. Today it reached the point where I couldn't continue without doing some maintenance on the hard drive. This afternoon I deleted a large number of unnecessary files, then started a defrag. It took three hours! It was long overdue.

My programs are starting much more easily now. And I don't know if it's just my imagination, but LiveJournal pages seem to be loading faster tonight.

The defrag finished at 9:30 this evening, so I figured the day was a write-off, so to speak.

"Oh, I'll just open Word," I thought. And that was fun to do without the computer freezing.

"I'll just write for a little while," I went on.

Huh. My fingers started to fly.

A little over two hours later, I had written 2,684 words, and essentially caught up to where I'm supposed to be, the two-thirds mark.

NaNoWriMo Progress Meter

I'm surprised at my determination, which, today at least, came out of nowhere.

You know, I find it oddly compelling to watch your NaNoWriMo gauge rise...

You go, grrrrrlll... ;)

I've really been enjoying the story. Yesterday I got up to Chapter 14. The stampede of the fantasy elephants was a real mind-trip.

When I was getting into it, I was expecting it to play sort of like an update of The Phantom Tollbooth (by Jules Feiffer), but it's unlike that or anything else I've ever read.

wonderful work from you! And it would seem that you're now in that position where the story is taking over so you just get into autopilot mode when you sit down at the console...

The Phantom Tollbooth

I was quite impressed with the movie when I saw it (I was probably about nine), but I never read the book.

If I'm inspired by anything it's Lewis Carroll, although that came after the fact of my writing those initial chapters in September. Danny was reading Alice when he stayed here a couple weeks later, and I saw the parallel. So I borrowed his book and read Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass this month, interspersed with The Farthest Shore and, now, Tehanu.

The characters certainly take over at times! I just wish I knew more about computer science, and, as it turns out, Jungian psychology.

That surge of determination is great. Ride it, boy! You're doing great.

I can't wait to catch up on everyone else's NaNos next month, when I'm done with mine. I wish I could keep up with everyone's, but I've got like six friends doing it this year.

Not to worry. I haven't been able to read more than a few samples from my friends' NaNos. I feel more need to keep up with what's happening in my friends' lives, as I seem to have less and less of one. ;-)

Woohooo! Congrats and good going!

I'm looking forward to reading all of this. Looks like I'll have time on my week off next week to do that!

Hugs and GO GO GO GO GO!

If you want to read it online you can friend [livejournal.com profile] blind_king because all the chapters are there. Or if you prefer, I can send you a copy of the Word document.

Looking forward to seeing you and talking to you later.

Hugs,
Van
