Did the beaver nearly go extinct? When I think of common species that were once threatened, my mind is brought most immediately to the Canada Goose.

Perhaps that's because, along with so many Vancouver residents, I secretly wish that they had gone extinct...

Beaver were nearly extirminated by the fur trade. I don't know about the geese, but the extinction of beaver would have altered our habitats irreversibly. They are considered ecosystem engineers because of how they alter their environments.

Thanks. The pedagogical style is unusual for me. Rereading it now, I think I should work on writing more coherently. Some of the points I wanted to make don't come off clearly.
