Starvation made me think particularly of photo images my colleagues brought back from Ethiopia and Sudan when I worked at World Vision. Kwashiorkor is a wasting disease often seen in starving children, characterized by their hair turning red and other symptoms. It's a word most North American's have never heard.

I hadn't heard it. Just the sound of the word, the way I imagine it's pronounced, sounds frightening.
