On the way home from our hike, I stopped and picked up a rare treat, a bottle of Bailey's Irish Cream. I haven't indulged that particular fetish since Christmas several years ago.

For dinner we had tourtière, a French-Canadian pork pie with savory and cloves, traditionally served on Christmas Eve. It came to mind when I was thinking about Christmases past. I had tourtière for the first time on Dec. 24, 1998 when Dan's friend Keltie served a delicious dinner to us and siome other friends. I made it myself for the first time this evening.

After dinner the girls and I fulfilled a time-honoured tradition of our own, going for a drive through suburbia to see the Christmas lights strung on house after house. I dislike the suburbs, but they habitually give a nice show, neighbour vying with neighbour for the twinkliest house on the street.

We came home and baked spicy orange ginger cookies. [livejournal.com profile] djjo expressed interest in these, so some of them are bound for Toronto next week.

I need to start the difficult task of steering the girls towards bed so that Santa can stuff their stockings.

Ah, Bailey's and pork pies, a wonderful combination! My sister's late French-Canadian mother-in-law passed down her delicious pork (and beef) pie recipe to my sister, and it's been our Christmas dinner for many years now. I never knew the actual name and still can't pronounce it, but I look forward to downing several slices tomorrow!
