A white day

An enchanting snow fell last night, the kind that sticks to everything. I went for a long walk and heard the Speed River thundering in darkness under MacDonell Street bridge. The Speed is the Eramosa's larger and more changeable partner. En route to the gym today I took a circuitous hike back to photograph the rapids.. This is the least appealing of the photos that follow, but it shows what's happening: a clear indication of spring.

The mallards seemed disconcerted by the flood, but they knew enough to land upstream from their chosen haven and let it carry them down. Once in safety, they were reluctant to give it up, so they let me approach closer than usual. Clearly they were not in their element. By contrast I have seen common goldeneyes riding rapids on the Saugeen River then flying back to the top with apparent delight.

Church of Our Lady keeps watch over the entire city, and is visible from all quaters.

Two more photos (one is a self-portrait of sorts) are posted in [livejournal.com profile] doorwindowwall.

Thanks Bill. I think it will be one of my favourite winter shots of the season. I felt like I had walked up to an Impressionist painting.

Thanks Paul. The church is a beautiful landmark; I have to do a photo essay one of these days.

In deep cold, snow is dry as dust. Near the freezing point, it is wet and sticks together, great for making snowballs and snowmen. The temperature last night must have been right at freezing for the snow to stick to small branches like that. These conditions are also pleasant for walking outside, compared to the nasty temperatures we had in late January and February.

Ahhhh these will likely be my last snow pictures of the season and they are wonderful... the snow trees in front of the building's window needs to be a puzzle. I'll take care of it. :)

Personally I would like to promise now more snow pictures, but for Ontario that would be awfully daring until the middle of April. Anyhow, I'm fond of the pic you chose and can't wait to put it together.

Wow. What gorgeous shots. I love them all, but the duck swimming about, and the Monet urban snowscape (I think this is the one Bill referenced--clever pet to know the actual photo #), are my faves.

It's amazing how cuddly you look even swaddled in a million layers of clothing.

In a word.....in Three words YES and NO. The climate is here is going very weird. Warm winters, (last October the birds were acting as though it was Spring as were the crops.) Often very cold weeks in 'spring' march - may and maybe some sun real hot sun, in any time between July and October. No short answers about Britains climate!
