Winter walk
Jan. 13th, 2004 07:20 pmBefore the temperature started to drop last night we must have had a little freezing rain because the high branches glimmered with crystal today. The sky was a blinding blue. Everything on Earth this blue—sapphire, azurite, the inside of a crab's shell—is rare and precious. Even true blue flowers are scarce. The sky is a wealthy god, vast and brazen, gloating downward. We are impoverished and our eyes smart at the sight.

The wind was sharp but I went for a longer walk than usual and took many pictures. At the top of a ridge overlooking the city my cap blew off but I managed to retrieve it. The building in the background is Guelph Turfgrass Institute, a big glass structure that stands alone on a hill on the edge of Guelph.

I saw an angel.
