All kinds of friends have posted those travel maps lately. It's pointless for me to do so; I have only visited two countries in my life. Instead of joining the map meme I decided to write a list of provinces and states I have visited, and memories associated with them. My favourite travel destinations outside Ontario have been British Columbia, Virginia, Florida and Massachusetts, more or less in that order. Now, in somewhat chronological order of first visits, here are the specifics.

Ontario: This is a giant place to visit in itself. I have never made it further north than Agawa Canyon, on a tour train from Sault Ste. Marie.

Michigan: Growing up in Windsor, I crossed the border to Detroit on numerous occasions.

Massachusetts (1966? and a few other times into the early 1980s): Every other year we would go to visit family friends, the Tobeys, in Easthampton, an area well known to [livejournal.com profile] my_last_sigh, often at Canadian Thanksgiving when the fall colour was at its peak. Colourful memories of the countryside.

Florida (1967, 1969, 1971, 1975, 1984): My family would go on the March Break, which usually overlapped with my birthday. We always camped inland, because my parents detested crowded places and hot sun. One of my earliest memories is of my third birthday at beautiful Alexander Springs. In 1984 I went down with my roommates from university for a few days before Christmas. We spent a day at the beach.

Quebec (1967, 1975): My family went to Expo in Montreal, another of my earliest memories. Later we passed through Quebec, but did not stop, on a trip to the East Coast.

Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia: We always drove to Florida, passing through these states and stopping for the night somewhere in Kentucky. I have visited Ohio on a couple other occasions, once to see the Cleveland Museum of Art in about 1981 and once for a student church conference in Coumbus in about 1984.

Pennsylvania (1973?): My parents and I toured Pennsylvania Dutch country. Only vague memories.

Nova Scotia (1975): We visited my aunt's family in Annapolis and did some camping before passing onto...

Prince Edward Island (1975): Wonderful camping and building red sand castles on the beach. Of course we went to Green Gables. The lupins were in bloom.

New Brunswick (1975): We passed through but did not stop en route to Nova Scotia and PEI.

Virginia (1976?, 1990): We visited Loray Caverns, the Blue Ridge, Monticello, Colonial Williamsburg and Chincoteague. I was impressed with Virginia, and chose it as the destination for my honeymoon in 1990.

Washington, D.C. (1976?, 1990): Tacked onto the Virginia trip, we visited family friends and went to the Smithsonian. Another stop on my honeymoon.

Alberta (1980): My brother and his wife lived in Calgary. My parents and I flew out that summer and went camping with them in the Rockies, before continuing onto B.C. We returned to Alberta for a few days at New Years and went cross-country skiing.

British Columbia (1980, 1987, 1991): My favourite destination so far, particularly Vancouver Island. I flew out West to camp alone at Pacific Rim National Park for a few days in 1987. My wife and I went back for a friend's wedding in 1991.

Connecticutt (1984): I visited with several university friends for a few days after school got out in April. Rob's family lived in Redding.

New York (1984, 1991, 2000): On the CT trip, we spent a day in NYC, my only visit there so far. My family had passed through the state many times en route to other places, but I don't remember those occasions. On my honeymoon in 1991, we spent one night in Pittsburg and went to a film festival in Richmond. In 2000 I dated Mike Morgan from Buffalo for several months. That's the last time I travelled outside Ontario.

Alabama (1984): On our way back from Florida, one roommate and I stopped to visit my friends the Lewises in Huntsville. Chuck Lewis worked for NASA.

Maryland (1985?, 1996): A church conference in Silver Spring; A gay gathering in Baltimore. The latter, in 1996, was my last long trip outside Ontario.
