A white day

An enchanting snow fell last night, the kind that sticks to everything. I went for a long walk and heard the Speed River thundering in darkness under MacDonell Street bridge. The Speed is the Eramosa's larger and more changeable partner. En route to the gym today I took a circuitous hike back to photograph the rapids.. This is the least appealing of the photos that follow, but it shows what's happening: a clear indication of spring.

The mallards seemed disconcerted by the flood, but they knew enough to land upstream from their chosen haven and let it carry them down. Once in safety, they were reluctant to give it up, so they let me approach closer than usual. Clearly they were not in their element. By contrast I have seen common goldeneyes riding rapids on the Saugeen River then flying back to the top with apparent delight.

4 more: white water and white landscapes )

Two more photos (one is a self-portrait of sorts) are posted in [livejournal.com profile] doorwindowwall.
