Vacation

Today I drove to Lindsay to collect the girls for March Break. Sudden mild temperatures have turned snow-covered fields into choppy lakes, occasionally making the road a causeway. In one spot, part of the road had washed out. A crane scooped heaps of soggy snow out of the ditch to hasten drainage.

Marian was not talkative. I wondered, until she drifted to sleep listening to Rufus Wainwright. In her entire life I only remember her sleeping in the car twice. She had mentioned she was up late every night this week, once to finish a project, other times just because. The grade tens watched Schindler's List in history class, so she borrowed it to view on her roommate's laptop. Her report card preceded her in the mail by one day: a 79 in French, 80s and 90s in everything else.

Passing through Little Britain I have often eyed the bakery, probably deluged by Friday commuters between Toronto and the Kawartha Lakes. I finally stopped today and bought a dozen tarts—blueberry, lemon, butter and raspberry-coconut—to take to my parents' tomorrow. The cookies we picked for ourselves promised good things. I'll be out of internet contact tomorrow morning until Tuesday.
