Market day
Sep. 16th, 2006 11:28 amGuelph Farmers Market this morning was ripe with harvest. I bought a three-litre basket of peaches to make chutney, and small cucumbers for pickles; a bunch of fresh dill. Couldn't resist a chunk of pumpkin pie fudge from The Village Sweet Shop (Rockwood).
A woman selling Turkish baked goods offered Turkish delight, 50 cents a cube. It was much different from the gelatinous confection available in Kensington Market: drier, more textural, less sweet, delicious, unfortunately only in pistachio flavour, no rose water.
I picked up just a few slices of thick bacon for a favourite dish, an idea stolen from Tolkien: bacon and mushrooms. Together with a couple thick slices of Brandywine tomato from my garden, it's going to be a perfect hobbit lunch.
