Market day

Guelph Farmers Market this morning was ripe with harvest. I bought a three-litre basket of peaches to make chutney, and small cucumbers for pickles; a bunch of fresh dill. Couldn't resist a chunk of pumpkin pie fudge from The Village Sweet Shop (Rockwood).

A woman selling Turkish baked goods offered Turkish delight, 50 cents a cube. It was much different from the gelatinous confection available in Kensington Market: drier, more textural, less sweet, delicious, unfortunately only in pistachio flavour, no rose water.

I picked up just a few slices of thick bacon for a favourite dish, an idea stolen from Tolkien: bacon and mushrooms. Together with a couple thick slices of Brandywine tomato from my garden, it's going to be a perfect hobbit lunch.

I remember seeing a Friday morning farmers market advertised in one of the little towns we passed through on Highway 8. I think it was Mitchell. I found this (it looks small and only runs May to October):

Brenna and I browsed through one in the square in Goderich the Saturday morning we were there, but it was quite small, and only runs Victoria Day to Thanksgiving weekend.

Guelph's is not large, and is somewhat reduced in winter, but there is a good selection of local produce, cheese, bread and other products, plust a number of artisans. I tried selling handmade paper there a few years ago. I wouldn't mind trying it again with a different array of handmade products.

thanks so much for the info, Van! I do know this website and i did check out the farmer's market in Goderich, but i thought it was rather depressing.
probably i'm spoiled, because in Germany there are huge farmer's markets with wonderful prodos and around here are some ridiculous little tables with some almost nothing on it.....

Yes, I had the same impression of the one in Goderich. I just didn't want to spoil it for you in case you hadn't tried it.

St. Jacobs Farmers Market is outstanding. Of course that is a little distance for you. It's about 40 minutes from here, but I like to make the trip a few times a year.

I'll try to bring you some sometime, or would I be killing you?

I used to feel that way about shellfish, when I had the really bad kind of allergy, which I fortunately outgrew. I won't try to explain how I discovered I'd outgrown it.

I won't have a chance to go back to the farmers market until October, but when I do I'll keep an eye open for that vendor.

Pumpkin pie AND fudge in one package!? Who do I have to blow to get some of that?

(Yes, I'm feeling masochistic, so I'm going to leave that obvious remark ripe for the plucking ;) )

Well I seem to be the one who knows where to get it, and might be induced to procure some for suitable compensation.

Pumpkin fudge is my favourite flavour. It's only available commercially around the Thanksgiving to Hallowe'en season. The Nutty Chocolatier sells it, too.

I'll have to check for some at the local farmers' market. :) I'd never heard of it before - but it makes sense at this time of year, natch. :)
