You might find this web site interesting if you have a pond behind your barn, or any other occasion to stroll around wetlands at night this time of year. From the Toronto Zoo, this online field guide includes embedded sound files of the various calls.

Frogs and toads of Ontario

I grew up on the outskirts of Toronto and spent all my time in the ravines, observing frogs and insects. This site brought back so many idyllic memories... I had forgotten... waiting for long hours, very still, in some boggy area, until the frogs would begin to peep out and slowly gather and resume their amazing choral music...

What a pleasant surprise to see you on LJ - I admire your work immensely. You actually stayed at our B&B in Warkworth many moons ago - almost another life really. Anyway, I hope your health is holding up - mine's a little wobbly right now - but we are all survivors in more ways than one.

Yes, I remember staying at your B&B. My health is, in the bigger picture, great... although I have been suffering from a herniated disc for the last while... still, it is slowly returning to normal. I divide my time between Toronto and New York and am somewhat busier than I like to be, but not overwhelmingly so.

Glad you enjoyed this. I grew up in the flatlands of Essex County where we only heard the occasional frog or toad. My first experience of a spring night in cottage country was overwhelming.

Toronto's ravines are an interesting phenomenon, like a wilderness below the city.

Dragonflies

When I was quite young (5 through 8) I lived on the outskirts of St. Jean d'Iberville, south of Montreal. That was a truly amazing place for frog-observing at the time, and there were also incredible numbers of dragon flies. I haven't seen a dragon fly in over 20 years, I think! Those are memories of my youth that I really miss.
