I discovered months ago that my monitor loses details in the dark values, which are clearly visible on other monitors. It's annoying knowing that other people will see more in my images than I can! But I don't know how typical my monitor is. Now I have a specific example that will allow me to test it.

When I looked at this unaltered image on Danny's new monitor on Saturday, I could clearly pick out colours in the stained glass window within the crematorium chapel. When I got home and transferred the same image onto my computer, I could see nothing beyond the top step but darkness and some faint light from the window, almost undetectable. Probably this has caused me to overlook many usable images. I need a better monitor. I suspect it also leads me to brighten many images more than I should for viewing on LJ. For the time being, it would help me to know what other people see.

[Poll #288515]

Thank you,
Van

Not vividly though, and I can barely pick out shapes. I see orange, green, a fainter dark red and an even fainter violet. This is my monitor at work though; have a hunch the one at home is a little better.

I'm using a Dell laptop. I assume I'd see them on my Mac laptop as well.

Forget the new monitor. What I really need is a laptop! ;-)

Laptops often have brighter screens. I'm at home and looking on my laptop now I can see the window.

Besides the brightness, how is the quality of images in general?

Excellent. I remember old laptops used to lose pixels but new ones don't. The quality of the image tends to be sharper than mid-range cathod ray screens.

Thanks, I'm considering buying a laptop when I can scrounge together the money. I would love to be able to work away from my office sometimes. It will have to compete with a better camera for priority.

All I can see are some spots of light.

A slight majority of people who replied can see colour. It's a good thing to know.

Now, I saw this picture at work, I just brightened the monitor, and I can now make out more of the colors. This isn't the newest, but not very old either. I'm guessing no more than a couple of years old.

However, my old monitor at home will not render this well at all. It's only 8 years old and at it's brightst settings and still can't render dark images well.

I'm replacing that monitor once I get my refund back from the IRS.

Where's the "barely" button?

I thought of including one, but figured it would make the results of the poll harder for me to interpret. If you see any colour at all, it's a "yes." All I see is three tiny smudges of grey light, and I'm not colour-blind

I just changed to a new monitor at work and looking at this image I realised I needed to increase the brightness. Now I can see the detail in the stained glass window.

At home there was more, but not much.

I know all the monitors I work on a very different. The ones at work tend to show more than my one at home. But I have the thing on high brightness at work. Makes doing things easier.

At home I have it turned down a bit, because I like deep deep blacks for playing games and movies.

Hugs! Danny

I have my brightness set to the max. I wonder how much detail I would have seen on your monitor with brightness turned higher. It's a nice piece of equipment.

Should have had a "just barely" selection as well.

I considered it, but if I had given that option, many people probably would have used it, and then I would have been no wiser. The actual results of the poll were helpful. A little more than half of people who responded see more than me.

I've noticed that dark images tend to be lacking in detail on my monitor -- including, I'm pretty sure, some photos that you have posted, which end up looking like nothing at all here. Looking at the same images on [livejournal.com profile] jwg's monitor can be quite surprising. I think I need a new monitor, too. (My birthday's coming up!)
