Thanks again to everyone who took time to comment on my monitor test, and thanks to everyone, friends and strangers, who answered the poll. The results so far have been illuminating. Once again the question:

"Can you see colours in the window inside the chapel."

23 people said "Yes."

18 people said "No."

Two additional people didn't answer the poll but said, "Just barely" in the comments section.

Conclusion: my monitor is not atypical, but a slight majority of viewers can see more detail in the dark values. Occasionally I have brightened images to enhance details, but with this evidence, I'll avoid that practise.

Cheers,
Van

Just now I discovered I can adjust the brightness using the Control Panel. By raising the gamma setting I get more detail in the shadows without washing out the whites. I'll enjoy looking at my own pictures much more now, not to mention other people's.

Now how does one calibrate? I have never done it before.

I forget what kind of system you have... I was wondering if there was a similar setting I could change, but I looked at my "Display" control panel (Windows XP) and couldn't find anything that looked right.

I have Windows ME. From the Display panel, click on the "Settings" tab, then "Advanced." In that panel, I have several tabs that appear to be specific to my monitor, one of them is "Color Management," in which I can adjust brightness, contrast and gamma. Try seeing if you have anything like that.

I'm with you up to "Color Management" (no alternative spelling for the Commonwealth market? For shame, MS!), but there doesn't seem to be anything of immediately obvious usefulness under that tab.

I'll have to speak to the fiancé about what kind of monitor should replace this one, I guess.

I was right

My monitor at home does suck. It barely revealed anything but a few white spots where the lightest panes of glass were.

Will be interesting to see how the new one fairs.

I didn't realize until yesterday that I could adjust my monitor's brightness, not only from the exterior controls, but also from the control panel. It is a big improvement. I put the instructions in another comment on this post.

I tried that (via Windows 98) and since I have a no "name monitor" (actually, a Magnavox) but could not figure out what monitor to choose since the closest I could find was Mag listed. So I don't have those setting via the control panel to use. :-(
