Here are some more photos from yesterday's walk through the woods across the river. Hopefully you enjoy ferns. Here you'll find a lot of them, especially in the moist riverine soil closest to the Eramosa.

Dead trees are essential to the ecology of a forest, serving as host to a wide variety of organisms like these large bracket fungi. Insects live in the wood, as evidenced by the woodpecker holes. Birds and other vertebrates depend on dead wood as a source of food and nest sites.

The rich bottomland is separated from the upper woods by a limestone cliff about 6 metres high, cut by the prehistoric action of the river. Ferns grow here too, in pockets of limestone that catch runoff water. It's a natural rock garden.

The dry woods on top of the cliff has a different texture. It consists mostly of sugar maple (Acer saccharum), contrasting with the riparian trees below: silver and red maple (A. saccharinum and A. rubrum).

All this looks very familiar. Last weekend I spent 2 days at Faerie Camp Destiny in Vermont. Lots of ferns along the forest floor, and lots of dead trees. My buddy [livejournal.com profile] crowman took some beautiful digital shots of one or two particularly special trees.

Are you going to Amber Fox this weekend? I'm not, just curious. I'm going to Toronto tomorrow and will be there until Monday. Won't get much time with Danny because he's working every day except possibly Sunday, but looking forward to the nights at least.

No, sadly, I'm not going. My first visit of the year there won't be until June 30 or July 1st, depending upon the travel arrangements we make. I should be in Ott by the afternoon of the 30th in any event.

Hope you have fun in TO. I know the nights will be good *grin*.

hugs, Shimmer

Ferns are my first love, and as such will always hold a special place in my heart. Perhaps it is because of the early connection that I seem to have a block in identifying them (don't tell anyone). These look like ones we have here though. Bracken ferns? *scuttles off to find fern id guide next time she goes romping through the woods*

I used to know ferns better. There are several different species in these photos, but I don't think any of them are brake ferns (we have lots of those, and plenty of other species, near the cottage).

Aren't they awesome? And even larger than they appear. The biggest is about two feet across.
