Here is the link to my Ecology essay for May at Suite101. It's mostly about the ecology of dead trees, but contains a few philosophical digressions about the cycle of life and death:

Snags and nurse trees

That was a great read. Thank you. We don't have any climax forests around here that I know of, either. I'm vaguely familiar with the forest lifecycle from reading, but you put in words for me. I am not surprised that dead trees play so many important roles, but it wasn't something I'd thought consciously about. Excellent information. Thank you. [smooch]

While researching this article, I remember reading something about climax forests in New England; they probably exist in the more rugged areas. Southern Ontario's forest would be similar to yours. It's a zone called Carolinian Forest that ranges down as far as—the Carolinas! Guelph lies on the northern fringe.

I've already wished it elsewhere, but happy birthday, this time with smooches.

I have the feeling that this article (over and above being a good read, and extremely interesting) is like a little window into your own soul. There is something about death and dying that is important to an understanding of your deep nature. I suspect that you are a very old soul, much like one of those fallen redwoods, and that this culture does not provide any easy way for your being to carry out its purpose in the ecology of this planet and more particularly this society.

I am looking forward to meeting you one of these days.

Hehe, having been born on practically the last day of the zodiac year, I've been told before that I'm an old soul. It's wonderful being a Pisces.

Honestly, I don't know what to make of that, but do have difficulty relating to our society.

I have to go to Toronto for June 15. Tentatively, I plan to go down on the Sunday evening and come back Wednesday afternoon. Will I overlap with you?

Nice article; you say a lot in not very many words. We tend to forget about the importance of dead trees in the life cycle of so many creatures.

The Pacific Rim National Park is an incredibly beautiful place - it's time to start thinking about another visit to Vancouver Island.

Thanks for your comment. I would love to go back to Vancouver Island now; my perspective on the world has changed so much.
