Horseshoe Falls, viewed from the observation deck at the base of the falls

Here are a few more photos from our day trip to Niagara Falls on Saturday.

Niagara-on-the-Lake: the Prince of Wales Hotel

Fort George: Brenna, Danny and Marian at the main gate

For those who would like to see men in period uniform, Fort George will hold a battle reenactment on July 16, 2005.

Tunnel beneath the falls

You can walk through 200 metres of underground corridors to reach portals behind the base of the falls where you can see water pouring past. These windows were blocked with ice, but the trip down was worthwhile, just to feel the force of the water shaking the rock around us. The corridor also gives access to the observation deck from which the first photograph in this series was taken.

Horseshoe Falls

Eastward view along the Niagara Gorge past the American Falls

This photo is eerie to look at now. We couldn't see it until we walked past the mist, but the bridge was clogged with emergency vehicles and all traffic had been diverted. Someone had jumped. Later we watched a fireman lowered on a line in a failed attempt to retrieve the dark body from the ice. We didn't stay to watch what happened after that.

We aspent a couple of days at Niagara Falls (on the Canadian side) a few summers ago. Yes, it's an incredibly tacky tourist trap, but the falls are just amazing. And it's interesting seeing a winter view.

Wonderful pics, Van.

Thank you. I like to visit once every few years. After all, it isn't far and it is one of the wonders of the world.

For my last trip to Toronto, I flew into Buffalo and before heading to Kitchener, Ken and I went to the Falls, ate in a touristy restaurant and even went into a tourist-trap tshirt shop. (I kick myself now for not buying anything.) The falls look really neat after dark.

I've been there four or five times in my life, but never seen it in the dark. Must do that one of these years.

Well, they light it up with a bunch of colored lights, which to me somewhat detracts from the effect, but it's pretty impressive anyway.

great pics there Van!

Dang - I won't be able to see the men fighting it out at the Fort. I'm booked for working that weekend. Unless something goes very wrong with the upgrade before then, that weekend is our go live.

Hugs!

Too bad. I don't know what the girls' schedule will be like or whether I'll be able to make it.

Great visit, especially last night. :-)

Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow. The girls and I will stop for dinner somewhere before we pull in, probably between 7 and 8.

It's interesting how both girls are beginning to express their identity through the clothes they wear. At their age I was not given any choice about what I wore. I'm happy to see their personalities emerging with more freedom than I had.
