Thursday evening


On the way to pick up djjo from the bus station last night I saw a hopeful thundercloud against the sunset. Returning home, we saw lightning crack halfway down the sky. But the storm never reached us.

With no relief, it was too hot for lovemaking. We watched The Big Chill, but snuggling was too sticky. Later we managed a few nuzzles before turning onto our damp halves of the mattress.

This morning I rolled over and spooned his rump. That was all it took. No more holding back.

After spending extended time with Danny I always miss him more. That has been the case since our trip to Rochester three weeks ago. I missed him last weekend at The Point, where we spent our second date in August 2003. I've even had decent sex, but missed the special intimacy and pleasure of being with him.

This morning we went to Value Village so I could pick up a pair of dark shorts for tomorrow's chorus performance. Then an air-conditioned lunch at the Red Papaya.

Now he's napping on the couch. I'm simply soaking up the comfort of his presence, a last deep breath before plunging into my busy summer.

God, I know exactly what you mean. When I had Sean and Jeff with me for 10 days over my birthday, I got so spoiled. It made the eventual leaving even harder than usual.

Also, I've learned that spooning against furry rumps in the morning always ensures we'll be even longer getting out of bed.

The distance must make things harder, too. Since things got serious between Danny and me, I don't think we have ever gone three weeks without a visit. I never would have considered any longer-distance relationship viable for myself, but I've begun to understand how it might work for some people. I've also begun to see how it might happen to me, hypothetically.

Service On Site is the name of the company that's doing the work. I don't know why the double meaning didn't occur to me until you mentioned it. I was a little surprised when one of the workmen said, "Sorry, I didn't catch your name," and then introduced himself. I wonder what it means.
