At last the bathroom renovation is practically finished. Today the workmen looked after a couple plumbing problems, trimmed the door to fit the frame, laid flooring, finished painting and accomplished a few further touch-ups. They have to come back tomorrow, but only to finish caulking and install a toilet paper roll. The only things unchanged are the toilet and sink. They're showing their age, but still functional. For some weird, inscrutable reason, the toilet is now raised above floor level on a small square of plywood. I want to install a cupboard above the toilet for towels and supplies, but that idea will have to wait at least until the fall.

Congratulations! It's nice to have a major renovation project like this finally start to wind down. I'm in the process of having my house sided and the front lawn landscaped (something I might write about), and I can't wait for it all to be finished. Hope you're doing well! Hugs.

Hey, it's so good to hear from you! I see I missed several posts earlier this spring, but I caught up on them just now. You're a great storyteller, you know. I've started writing 200-word daily posts here, because 100words worked so well for me (this bathroom thing is just an extra, tacked on). Anyway, I've missed you. And I hope you are well.

xoxo
Van

That's Marian's choice actually, but it's all I've got right now!

Oh yes, it was a pain! They started on June 2. I actually had to clear out for a week, because they had to tear into the floor and walls so I had no bathroom. It was supposed to be done last Wednesday, but they kept finding more problems in this old house. I finally had a toilet on Thursday and a shower on Friday. It's a great relief to get this done though. The other rooms in my apartment are just old and tired, fully functional, but the bathroom and hall were seriously broken. Now they're fixed.

woohoo!

The flooring looks really nice. I'm glad it's almost done - it'll be for you to not have to have these guys there all the time.

Mention to them though that the toilet sweats, and it was wet around it on the weekend. They might need to caulk around it so that the wood plank there doesn't get soaked and rot.

Yeah, I pointed that out to them this morning, and mentioned that it seemed to be leaking a bit on Sunday. It looks like they're going to do the caulking tomorrow. The floor tile is that really cheap stuff, thin as cardboard, so it will probably need to get glued down again sometimes. But overall the bathroom looks like a different bathroom.

Cyberhugs for now,
Van

as a temporary measure, you could get a portable
shelf on legs. we have one in one of our bathrooms,
and it serves pretty well for some hings.~paul

Thanks for that idea, Paul. The old bathroom only had a mirror and some separate horrible old falling-apart shelves above the toilet. The new medicine cabinet is much nicer, although not big enough for all my bathroom stuff. I'll be able to store some supplies under the sink, now that it doesn't leak and I'm out of the "small children" stage. The towels currently reside in my bedroom in the bottom drawer of my bureau and a box in the corner. I would like to move them out of there, because the bedroom is exceedingly small and short on storage space.

You can also get build-it-yourself shelving units that have long legs and fit around a toilet (so that the legs fall on either side of the tank and the shelves are just above). Just make sure you measure the width of your toilet tank first.
