Earlier this evening Marian phoned to wish me a happy Father's Day. When we were done, I asked her to put Brenna on the line. I hadn't talked to her in over a month.

My parents had taken the girls to the cottage on Victoria Day weekend. Mom told me later that Bren mentioned out of the blue that she wanted to go to Prince Edward Island someday. Mom, not knowing whether Bren had heard about our summer plans yet, refrained from spilling the beans.

So I asked Bren whether anyone had told her where we're going camping this summer. No, she said.

I broke the news: "Nova Scotia, PEI, New Brunswick. We'll stop in Montreal for a couple days."

"That is so cool," she said, but her voice was hesitant, incredulous. She guards herself against disappointment. She asked, "Have you discussed this with Mom yet?"

"Yes," I said. "We've already worked out the dates."

Her skepticism began to subside.

"That is so cool!"

I mentioned the conversation she had had with my mother, and asked whether there was anything she particularly wanted to see on PEI.

"Not really, it just sounds neat," she said, then added, "I want to see the provincial dirt."

PEI is famous for its red soil, and no kidding, that is the sort of thing Brenna would make a pilgrimage to see.

*gentle smile* I'm reminded of my own growing up, when I felt a distinct deprivation due to our family living in a land-locked area, there-by preventing me from experiencing tides.

Not that I've planned it that way, but since leaving home, I've never been farther than 20 minutes from the sea...

Crazy(looking forward to Brenna's trip, now!)Soph

I've lived my life far from the ocean, although growing up on Lake Erie felt like living by the sea, with the sound of waves pounding on the beach on summer nights. I could never be happy living away from water. I've visited the ocean a few times—in Florida, Virginia, Nova Scotia, PEI and British Columbia—and absolutely loved it. My favourite time was camping on the Pacific beach on Vancouver Island, beachcoming and gazing into tide pools all day. Out of my life I've probably spent less than 20 days at the ocean, but they're vivid in my memory.

Marian and Brenna have spent a couple March vacations in Mexico, so they have seen the ocean much more recently than me. My last real ocean holiday was in 1987, so I'm looking forward to this.

I've never been to PEI, and I'd like to. I wonder if our not going there has something to do with the fact that [livejournal.com profile] jwg visited it many years ago and had such a horrendous hay fever attack that he had to leave immediately.

Considering none of us suffers from hay fever, hopefully we'll pass the visit unscathed. ;-)

Given that allergy medications are much more effective than they were then. probably so would we.

For some strange and inexplicable reason, your post has made me think of Marian in "Anne of Green Gables" red pigtails. Not that I ever expect to see such a thing, it just amuses me that my mind would come up with such an image.

That is indeed a strange image.
