Yahoo deleted the porn group Big Hairy Bears yesterday. It was run by my friend Mike Dirda. Last night he asked me whether I thought he should bother starting up again, and I suggested finding an alternative to Yahoo. I'm not internet savvy enough to know what would work, although I did suggest setting up a LiveJournal community. It wouldn't work like an email distribution list, but it would offer some advantages.

It turns out Mike is considering restarting on Yahoo simply because the good rebel wants to resist their opposition to gay groups. Someone else told me, however, that Yahoo is planning to delete all their adult content groups this week, not just gay ones.

I offered to ask around for ideas, and Mike said that would be great. So I'm wondering, can anyone suggest alternatives to the Yahoo group thing?

There's something called myspace (don't know whether it is dot com or not--tell him to try google) that somebody who is a passing acquaintance told me about a few weeks ago, and I've heard more buzz about it since then.

There's also tribe.net, for which I am registered but which I hardly ever use.

Our Teaching list I think has an adult content flag on it, and I really hope they alert us if they're going to delete it--that really might give my Teacher a heart attack if the whole thing goes...

Thanks for those ideas. I'll pass them along.

This isn't the first time Mike's group has been deleted. I suspect they're only targetting groups that deal in pics. But who's to say?

Well, this isn't the first time Mike's group has been deleted. My guess is they'll only target groups that distribute images.

It's not just yahoo, a lot of ISPs in the states are removing anything that could even remotely be considered porn, because of new laws requiring extensive documentation for every image posted, displayed, hosted, or made, as well as a permanent "registrar" for this info and a location that's open 40 hours a week where federal agents can make surprise inspections. It is insane. There are no alternatives in the US because people are running scared.

Hmm, I heard mention of that for the first time a few days ago. I wonder what planet I live on. Canada, I guess. I didn't make the connection with this round of Yahoo deletions. I wonder how this will effect content on LiveJournal.

it's crazy ... I worry what the fallout will be for us, given the US pressure to "harmonise".

Haha, good point! That's all I use Yahoo for anymore.

I wonder how the new law is going to affect sites like this.

He should try gmail. They have adult groups. As for the whole adult thing? My sitting here looking at your underwear clad ass is enough porn for me.

Ah the simple things in life!
