She has grown up so much in a year. Thursday at the cottage she was much more willing to join in with me an Brenna—a paddle in the canoe, playing Monopoly—than she would have been last year. I think she learned it at school this year: that even if people aren't doing exactly what we want to do, sometimes it's worth being involved for the sake of companionship. And she is good company. This is going to be a great summer.

This photo was taken Thursday evening on Joyce's dock at Lake Fletcher.

Wow. She's lovely! And isn't it delightful when you can enjoy your teens' company because they are willing to enjoy yours? A great gift, that.

Sometimes it seems there are advantages to not living together. We certainly don't take each other for granted.

Not a girl, not yet a woman.

Ew.  I just quoted Titney Spears.

But she is much more of a woman. Living away from home has matured her.

An arresting photo.

There's something in Marion's expression seldom seen in folks her age.
While it's hard to imagine being serene at Marion's age since I think it to be an impossibility until an older age, she exudes a sense of that calmness. As much as a photograph can portray it, in her pretty face there is an assurance of a brain fully engaged. She will be someone who addresses things on her own terms. Her passions will be her own and not pursued merely because everyone else is interested in a given thing. She is cautious yet open. Chest-deep in the turmoil of being in one's mid-teens, yet loving.

On the superficial; this couldn't have been a lovelier photo had it been taken by anyone else. I can't imagine not bursting at the seams with pride and love for a daughter such as you have.

Thank you. Your perceptions are quite accurate. She does have some sense of peace about her, too.

Above and beyond your daughters being really gorgeous, I think it's a testament to your parenting that you are letting them grow up to be who they want to be. Congratulations!

And I hope you're doing okay there. Wishing you a better day.

OMG...there's something amazingly painting-like about that picture...

It reminds me of Modigliani, for some reason...

Interesting! Marian and I saw the Modigliani exhibit at Art Gallery of Ontario last fall. I think I see what you see. Not Modigliani eyes, though!

Speaking of AGO, I think that's one of the places I'd like to go while I'm there, if you're not averse to the idea...and you're right, not the eyes. :)

No, the AGO would be terrific. I don't know offhand what the special exhibits are just now, but I've only seen their permanent stuff once, so it would be fun to go back.

What a wonderful photograph! She is lucky to have a portrait like that to keep for future comparisons.

It's not easy persuading kids to relax in front of the camera, but certainly worthwhile.
