LJ Interests meme results

  1. bookmaking:
Paper feels to me as a writer as soil feels to me as a gardener. Pages and ink are my medium, rather than letters on a keyboard or monitor. Books as a work of art fascinate me. I made two as Christmas gifts for my daughters two years ago, but that's all so far.
  2. compost:
One of the things I miss most about gardening is having a compost pile. Throw all your scraps in a pile and the next spring you have fertilizer that brings stale soil to life. Earthworms love it, too, and that's a good thing.
  3. dreams:
Usually in colour. My dreams usually fit into the adventure or thriller genre. Sometimes I'm a woman. Lately I haven't remembered my dreams regularly, but I've had a few lucid dreams.
  4. geology:
I'm fascinated with how the earth has changed over time, and how its physical structure has influenced the evolution of life. I also collect minerals.
  5. lakes:
I like to sit and watch them for hours.
  6. natalie goldberg:
Her book Writing Down the Bones has influenced my approach to writing more than any other.
  7. piano:
I miss having a piano. Playing is one of the best stress relievers. I passed my grade eight exams in the Royal Conservatory of Ontario. I like to play Rachmaninoff, Brahms and Chopin among others. I'm a good sight reader but can't play by ear very well.
  8. self-therapy:
I recommend Intimacy and Solitude by Stephanie Dowrick, plus the accompanying workbook. Meditation, visualization and journaling have done more for my sanity than any other treatment.
  9. swimming:
Preferably in lakes on the Canadian Shield. I like to snorkel, visiting the fish and aquatic plants. Pools are boring.
  10. water:
Water is my element, more than any other. I'm never happy when I'm far from it.

I've been thinking of working on a book, composed of liturgical texts from my Tradition. I thought I would get a kit but then customize certain things such as the fabrics for the covers, the paper, etc.

That's a great idea. Check out [livejournal.com profile] handmadebooks; it's full of inspiring projects. It's such a busy community that I filtered it off my default friends page a while ago, but the content is consistently high quality. I guess bookmakers are a fastidious lot.

It's relatively easy to make a nice folded book with a few pages (say 32 or less) from a few inexpensive supplies. You should be able to find instructions online. If you want something larger it will need to be bound, which is a little fussier and requires some equipment. I haven't gone to that extent yet, but I believe there are kits that will serve.

I had no idea we had so many interests in common ...

compost ... yes! I had the good fortune to receive a free compost tumbler a month or so ago, and we are well underway with load of loamy goodness. We have several bins already but they take a lot of work to aerate. I loves me tumbler ...

Natalie Goldberg - what a wonderful writer and wise woman. I can remember vividly the place where I first cracked open one of her books and drank deep

Bookmaking - there is nothing like the experience of binding one's own book and putting the first marks in it. Being an inveterate bibliophile actually MAKING a book is a very heady and satisfying experience.

Dreams - I have always had a vivid dreaming life and have tried to draw them when I allow myself time. Color, definitely, and sometimes even other special effects. I had the chance to spend a night in S. LaBerge's dream lab back in the 80s and had a lucid dream with electrodes hooked up to my head. Wild!

Geology - I don't know more than what I learned in one college class, but it was one of my favorite classes. Many other things have slipped from my memory, but I still think syncline and anticline when I drive through certain nearby mountainous passes ... I love learning science and natural history ...

That's cool! Yes, I noticed we had a few matches on our interest lists. I have yet to attempt a bound book. Maybe a Christmas project this year! Your idea of drawing dreams is interesting. Sometimes they're difficult to put into words, but playing with colour and imagery might help draw out the story.
