I achieved a new high score in Spider solitaire this morning: 1105. My previous best, 1066, had been on the books for several years. I won't tell you how many games I've played.

I'll catch the 11:45 bus to Toronto this morning. I still have the car but the price of gas has contributed to my decision to leave it behind. It's back up to 129.7 Canadian cents per litre here this morning, which translates to about 4.17 USD per gallon.

I have a dentist appointment this afternoon and my annual physical tomorrow morning, then I'll stay for the weekend. I'll probably make a regular post from Toronto later today.

would that be $4.17 USD? and $1.297 Canadian
per litre? our gas pumps always have 9 tenths
added on the end.~paul

Yes. Gas prices in most of Canada had never risen above a dollar per litre until last month. We're still used to saying "eight-seven five" or "ninety-three nine" and don't know what to do with the extra digit yet. I stammer, "A hundred and twenty-nine seven," incredulous and intimidated by the D word. Most signs were not designed for it either. The decimal point always appears after the cents.

we're still about 50 cents US below that. when i was in High School,
gas was from 25 to 30 cents a gallon. ~paul

I even remember gas being less than 30 cents before Canada switched to Metric. After that, I remember 13 cents per litre.

Gas is usually more expensive in well-heeled Guelph than elsewhere, but I've also heard of it soaring over $4 per gallon in parts of the States.

well, i think we can blame a good deal of that on the election
and(i could hardly believe it, but it happened!)the re-election
of this bozo. Our governments should be promoting electric
and CNG-powered vehicles, too, but they're not. the technology
for both of them is already completed. the worst
thing about this guy isn't his just barely average intelligence,
it's his insistence on cronyism in office. still, in this
hemisphere, we're luckier than the old world. more space,
more resources, more of everything except for common sense.~paul

And thanks, I've edited to correct the error.

I cannot find an animated graphic so just picture this...

I am on my knees and bowing in a way that says 'I am not worthy to be in your presence'. (I'm happy to say that my Spider score was wiped out in the reformatting and I can start fresh so I reached my new high yesterday. But it sure weren't no 1105.)

Ok, now hear me groan like the old woman I am when I get up from my knees. Remind me to find a graphic, I am too old for this crap.

hugs and see you tonight!

Believe it or not, I didn't know about Spider Solitaire till about a month ago, when I read Tanya Huff's book Smoke and Shadows. In it one of the characters plays it a lot, and she uses it as a divination tool.

And I played it for the first time this weekend. OY!!!

I've managed to solve the 1 suit play ok, and only solved the 2 suit once so far. I don't even want to think what the 4 suit would be like. AHHHH!

A divination tool, that's interesting! I like it better than other solitaires because it involves some strategy, and you can overcome a bad deal. I'm always amazed at how differently one game can play out compared to another. I tried to learn fortune telling using regular cards when I was a kid, and I can see how Spider would be an interesting tool.

My win rate with 4 suits is 32 per cent, but I skip a lot of badly distributed deals. The stats don't count skipped games as losses unless you have moved a card.

My win rate is 32 per cent, but I've been playing Spider with real cards since I was a teenager. It's a lot easier on the computer because you can undo moves, which helps a lot when you have choices to make. I also skip a lot of badly distributed deals (too many cards of the same value). The stats don't count games you skip if you haven't played any cards.
